Quote du jour/Charles Dudley Warner

Here's another wonderful quote from one of my favorite gardening books.

I like to go into the garden these warm latter days, and muse. To muse is to sit in the sun, and not think of any thing. I am not sure but goodness comes out of people who bask in the sun, as it does out of a sweet apple roasted before the fire. The late September and October sun of this latitude is something like the sun of extreme Lower Italy: you can stand a good deal of it, and apparently soak a winter supply into the system.

  1. We've had the most beautiful clear blue, golden sun day here, so I know exactly what Mr. Warner means - how lovely to think of storing up a supply for colder, darker times!

  2. As you move into autumn we here in the Southern Hemisphere welcome spring with open arms and hearts. There is blossom and new buds, ducklings on the lake, the shining cockoo has arrived from the northern Pacific islands to lay her egg in the tiny fantails nest and the air smells fresh.
Your blog is lovely, I especially enjoy the poetry and book reviews. I am going to try and order acouple of them !

  3. How true he is!! I adore sitting out in the autumn sun, especially when there's still a nice warm breeze blowing, and the air is cool and crisp! Wonderful quote, and your header picture is enchanting!

  4. Oh, I like that quote. What a nice thought that goodness is coming from me as I bask in the sun - and storing a supply to sustain me over winter is wonderful!

  5. No October sun here. It rained most of yesterday and the forecast is for more rain today. Oh, to sit and bask in the sun! I'll have to imagine it.

  6. What a lovely quote. I love to bask in the sun any chance I get, especially now that winter is just around the corner. Well, maybe down the road a bit. :)

  7. Thank you for the inspiring quote. I'm planning to spend as much time in the garden this autumn as my busy life will allow, to soak up my "winter supply" of sun. :)

  8. Thanks to each of you for the comments. It is a great thought, isn't it. I so recommend his book. He was friends with, and I believe wrote some with, Mark Twain.

Ngaio, welcome, and please come again. I'm off to visit you. I love what is going on in your part of the world right now.
