Tom's Farm and Weather Journal - February 8

I was surprised to see that I haven't written a weather journal entry since December 22. It's been a cold few weeks here and quite snowy. Those of us who live where it's cold in the winter know that January sometimes just takes over. The January 16th high was 4ºF and the low was -36ºF. I keep up with moving firewood, taking care of the barn animals, raking snow off our roof and plowing our yard. But January days are short, and mostly I leave for work in the dark and get home in the dark so some things get left undone. One of these is shoveling. Instead of clearing a path, we just walk out our doors and pack the snow into trails. Mostly this works fine, but the last two days have been warm and now that packed snow has turned to ice. So on this warm day (high 45ºF) I got out the chopper blade and went to work.

  1. My husband spent some time this afternoon doing the same thing. With temps in the 40's, it almost feels like spring!

  2. Hi JoAnn--I was telling Nan today it felt like March outside. We had sun, snow squalls and wind. Chopping ice is quite satisfying work.

  3. I think we have your weather here in England, I have been snowed up completely, and photographs of snowmen have taken over from the dire economic predictions on the news.
We aren't used to it at all, fun for a while, but I think we have had enough now, would you like it back?

    Carole.

  4. Would I like it back? Hmmm--since today felt like March I would say no, we've had enough. But it's not in my hands, is it? And it really is only Feb. so I'm sure we'll be getting plenty more.

  5. It is a good thing you have Tom around Nan. That ice looks thick. January is a long month. February will be better...I hope.

  10. Today we were so thankful for the 45-degree temperatures, even though we know there's probably much snow and cold to come before winter is finished with us.
But I'm increasingly aware of "February light" as the sunshine moves through the house. My houseplants notice it, too!

  11. I just love looking at people's bookshelves - I just want to run my hand along your header picture and take down Mrs Meigs and Mr Cunnigham to see what it's like...

  12. Margaret, it was lovely. You are so right about the light. I'm (Nan here) now surprised in the afternoon to see how late it is! What a wonder and joy the weather and the light are.
Scriptor Senex, I (Nan) loved that book, but after I read it, I found out there is one which procedes it- The Young Mrs Meigs. List of EC books here:
